Hidden Treasures of the Underground Railroad:
Connection or Coincidence?

Participants explore the possible connections of favorite children’s traditional songs and well known quilt squares to the Underground Railroad while learning how this collection of songs also works well for rhythmic literacy and as partner songs, as found in the New Haven Kodály Folksong Collection.

Rebecca Fay Squire holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia, Master of Music Education (with Kodály emphasis) from The Hartt School, University of Hartford, and CAGS in Music Administration and Supervision, also from The Hartt School. She studied in Graz, Salzburg and Vienna, Austria at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst. Rebecca has taught elementary general music in Clyde-Savannah, Orchard Park, and Cobleskill in upstate New York. Now located in Connecticut, she has taught in West Hartford, New Haven, and currently teaches at Saugatuck Elementary School in Westport. Rebecca has held positions as adjunct Professor of Music Education at Fairfield University and as Past President of the Organization of American Kodály Educators Eastern Division. She has served the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) through the Teacher Education and Mentoring (TEAM) program as a cooperating teacher, mentor, Assessor and Portfolio Scorer. She currently serves CSDE as Task Leader for the Grade Five Singing Assessments of the Common Arts Assessments. As a professional harpist, she runs a harp studio in her home, with many of her private harp students performing together frequently in Harpeggios, a student harp ensemble.
